    You then create the user's home directory and use the passwd command to set his password. However, the user calls you and says that he cannot log on. What is the problem?

    When you create the new user's home directory, the permissions are set with root as the owner. You need to change the ownership so that bobm can access his home directory. Otherwise, he will not be able to login.
